Hypnosis is best defined by Dave Elman, one of the greatest hypnotists of modern time:
"Hypnosis is a state of the mind in which the critical faculty (CF) of the human mind is bypassed, and selective thinking established"
The critical faculty is simply that part of your mind which acts like a gatekeeper to your much more powerful subconscious mind. The critical faculty’s role is to determine what information will be allowed to pass on through into the subconscious mind.
Without the function of the critical faculty to control the information flowing into the subconscious, the subconscious would be perpetually bombarded with information that could turn out to be even contradictory. This can present a problem...as the subconscious is designed to accept any information presented to it - true or false - as its reality.
Why should we be interested in the function of the critical faculty? Well...the reasons are twofold;
1st - The critical faculty does not fully form until approximately the age of four or five. Up until that time any information introduced to the subconscious mind becomes the base programming that will continue to operate until that programming is replaced. Children's minds truly are like sponges. Whatever gets into their minds first...sticks! (Something media advertisers already know much to well!)
2nd - Once the critical factor is fully formed it's sole function is to determine if new information presented to it is congruent with what was first presented to the subconscious. If that new informtion introduced is congruent, it is allowed to pass easily into the subconscious and reinforce the previous congruent beliefs. If the new information is not congruent, well then the new information is simply rejected - it just won't be allowed in,(even if that new information presents a better outcome!)
Hypnosis is simply the bypass of this critical factor.
The hypnotic process allows an alternative to existing limiting belief's.
Hypnosis never was about mind control! You choose to accept or reject any idea...at any level of the mind. It is the hypnotic process that allows your subconscious mind positive suggestions that you allow to become your new reality.
All hypnosis is self hypnosis.
In 1958 the AMA, (American Medical Association) finally recognized
hypnosis as a beneficial treatment. Leading authoritative sources have
followed this earlier ruling by reinforcing the power and benefit of hypnosis. These include the
Mayo Clinic, the National Institute of Health, AMA, publications such as Scientific American, Time, U.S. News and World
Report, Reader’s Digest, Business Week, and most major TV networks
including ABC, CBS, and NBC.
In a review of literature published in Psychotherapy magazine (Volume 7, Number 1, Alfred A Barrios, PhD) various therapeutic techniques were profiled. The greatest success in providing lasting change occurred with hypnosis (93% recovery), followed by behavioral therapy (72% recovery), and then psychotherapy (38% recovery).
Hypnosis works!
